Science & Technology November 2008

-----------------------------Science & Technology Fair-------------------------
Over 270 pupils, aged 13 and 14years, from Costello Technology College, Everest Community College and The Hurst Community College visited the Science and Technology Fair held at the Costello Technology College, Basingstoke.  With the emphasis on science, the Heart & Lung Unit from the North Hants Hospital were invited to attend and provide an insight into the many science related careers, including Cardiac Physiology.  Members of staff from the department were on hand to answer questions from looking after your heart to "what qualifications do I need to become a Cardiac Physiologist?"

Feedback from the pupils (92%) has indicated a positive link between the application of science and careers.

Insight into Health and Social Care 2008
The ARK Centre at the Basingstoke North Hampshire Hospital Foundation Trust was the venue for the next installment of Insight into Health and Social Care 2008.  February 25th was the opportunity for 30, GCSE and BTEC, students to find out about careers in the health sector.  On completion of talks from members of the Trust's clinical staff,  the students were presented with four health related workshops.

January 17th saw the Insight into Health and Social Care event held at the Basingstoke College of Technology (BCOT).  Pupils and students involved in GCSE or BTEC courses in health and social care were invited along to meet an array of organisations involved with those services.  Between 100-150 candidates from around the North of the county  visited each stand and discussed academic and career opportunities.  Organisers, Carol Johnston and Jackie Calvert from the Basingstoke Consortium, invited the Heart & Lung Unit from the Basingstoke and North Hampshire hospital to participate.  Rebecca a 4th year student from the department demonstrated some of the equipment used to investigate heart disease and explained to the students about her training.
Next years event is already being planned and will be held at Queen Mary's College, Basingstoke.  Other similar events are already planned for the region.

Basic
Echocardiography for
Acute
Management
October 2007
The Heart  & Lung Unit, in association with Dr Cliff Reid , delivered the first BEAM course.  The course was created in response to a clinical need for ultrasound in the emergency department.  The rationale for this education proramme is to teach  Emergency Department Consultants and Registrars to identify key cardiac landmarks and acute pathologies.  The "hands on" programme permitted ED doctors to scan normal and abnormal  subjects.  Expert echocardiography advice was delivered by a faculty of cardiac physiologists from the Heart & Lung Unit.  Feedback from delegates was extremely positive and a second course is already being planned.

Quality Assurance

The Heart & Lung Unit at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Foundation Trust Hospital, has just initiated a voluntary audit of its pacing and echo services.  In an effort to continually improve cardiac services for Basingstoke and the North of the county, the department is investing in a rolling audit programme across two services.  The outcomes of both initial audits will spark any necessary changes in practice and improve patient care.  Future plans include auditing remaining areas within the Heart & Lung Unit.

Echo Technology

Deborah Ward, Chief Cardiac Physiologist demonstrates the new echo machine at the North Hants Hospital.  The new Vivid 7 Dimension from GE Healthcare Systems is integral to maintaining and improving the echo service provided by Basingstoke and North Hampshire Foundation Trust.  It is intended to harness the 3D technology and provide pathology specific clinics.
