Health and education are
synonymous with high quality
healthcare service. As such
all members of staff are
trained and educated to a high
level. The collaborative
encourages education and
development, and works with
academic institutions to
ensure that education is
relevant and applied in
context.
Undergraduate Education
FdSc Applied Medical
Technology (Cardiac Medical
Technician)
This is a relatively new role
within cardiology and is as a
result of workforce
development by the Wessex
Cardiothoracic Department,
Southampton and the Cardiac
Investigation Unit,
Portsmouth. Students
undertake a 2 year (full-time)
or 3 year (part-time) course
in Medical Technology and opt
for the cardiology specialist
unit. The only education
provider for this course is
the University of Portsmouth.
On completion of this course
occupational standards for
cardiology are to be achieved
within 2 years of graduation.
FdSc Clinical Physiology
A foundation degree in
Clinical Physiology is now
also being offered by the City
of Westminster College, London
for those wishing to become
Associate Practitioners in
cardiology or other
disciplines. Potential
applicants without the
necessary academic
qualifications can enrol onto
the year zero programme.
On completion of the
Foundation Degree in Clinical
Physiology, those members of staff with
the ability and enthusiasm may
continue to study and enrol
into year 3 of the
BSc (Hons) Clinical
Physiology.
BSc (Hons) Clinical
Physiology (Cardiac
Physiologist)
A
four year vocational degree
programme culminating with
state registration. This is
the fundamental academic
requirement for this career.
As a vocational degree,
students acquire clinical
skills in the workplace and
receive the under pinning
knowledge from an accredited
education provider. Also
note that this course is now
being delivered in a full-time
mode. This requires the
student to enrol with the
provider and attend clinical
placements.
