Goodbye
A service dedicated to the memory of all those involved with the cardiac department was held on June 16th 2009 at St Mary's Hospital  The service, led by Dr John Watkins and the chaplaincy, remembered the patients and staff over the last twenty years.  Dr Watkins, a co-founder, recounted how the department was created from charitable funds and goodwill.  The Reverend Carolyn Headley and Father Andrew Chandler gave thanks to all those from the department who have cared for and treated patients, whilst Christine Grandison lit a candle in memory of those patients.
Over seventy members of staff, clinical and clerical, past and present attended the service and retold their fondest memories.

New Chapter..............the beat goes on!
Dr Richard Jones thanked Dr Watkins for his part in what was then an innovative contribution to cardiology, which has ultimately led to the creation and expansion of the new department at the Queen Alexandra's Hospital.  Dr Jones also praised the staff for providing a high quality service over two sites 10 miles apart for such a long time.  But now, for the first time the department will be on one site, and larger and more specialised than ever.  The new department has been designed to set standards in cardiac care.  The facilities provided by Cardiac Investigations Unit include three cardiac catheterisation laboratories, three exercise treadmills, three echo rooms, three ECG rooms, two ambulatory rooms, rhythm analysis rooms, pacing follow up rooms, dedicated transoesophageal echo room and reporting stations.  All facilities have direct links to cardiac outpatients, the cardiac wards, including coronary care care unit and accident & emergency.

Health
Science

In a drive to increase the number of school children going onto further and higher education, Portsmouth Hospital Trust in partnership with Portsmouth EBP, held their "Step into Healthscience" event at St James's Hospital, Southsea.  It was attended by over 150 year 8-11 pupils from eight schools, targeted by Aimhigher, in Portsmouth.  All pupils taking science based subjects were introduced to a variety of science based careers within the National Health Service.  PHT and Portsmouth EBP hold regular healthscience, events throughout the year.

HMS Warrior

Schools' Science Fair
O
ver 1500 school children from the Portsmouth area were aboard HMS Warrior for an activities day in science. The Y6 children moved between the ship's cannons and mess decks to discover science in the workplace and in their daily lives. Portsmouth Hospital Trust sent along representatives from the healthscience part of its workforce, including members of staff from the Cardiac Investigations Unit. Christine, a senior chief cardiac physiologist allowed the children, and their teachers, to practice basic life support, see how a pacemaker works and listen to their own heart beats.

The event was organised by Portsmouth and South East Hampshire Education Business Partnership Ltd.
