January 27th 2008 - Working Lunch for
Healthcare Science
The Southampton General Hospital hosted its 4th annual working
lunch in support and promotion of careers within healthcare
science. Pupils from local schools were invited to the
morning period and were given an introduction to how the
hospital functions on a daily basis. After which the
pupils toured stands manned by healthcare scientists
demonstrating their roles and careers. The Technical
Cardiology department was represented by three student cardiac
physiologists. The afternoon session allowed students from local
colleges to follow the same journey as the pupils. Over
250 children/students took up the challenge and were a credit to
their school/college. The day went off without a hitch and
that was largely due to the exceptional organisational skills of
Alison Day and Kim Sutton.

Pupils were given a brief insight into the spectrum of careers available with the NHS. Afterwhich they were all invited to get their “hands on”, equipment used within cardiology. Everyone enjoyed practicing their basic life support skills on the resuscitation manikin.
