Developments - Southampton University Hospital Trust

January 27th 2008 - Working Lunch for Healthcare Science
The Southampton General Hospital hosted its 4th annual working lunch in support and promotion of careers within healthcare science.  Pupils from local schools were invited to the morning period and were given an introduction to how the hospital functions on a daily basis.  After which the pupils toured stands manned by healthcare scientists demonstrating their roles and careers.  The Technical Cardiology department was represented by three student cardiac physiologists.  The afternoon session allowed students from local colleges to follow the same journey as the pupils.  Over 250 children/students took up the challenge and were a credit to their school/college.  The day went off without a hitch and that was largely due to the exceptional organisational skills of Alison Day and Kim Sutton.

The “What’s Next Fair?” was the title of the career day at Thornden School. The year 10 and 11s were introduced to a wide range of educational opportunities and careers available when they leave school. Technical Cardiology from the SGH were invited along and represented the HCS workforce as well as their own specialism. Pupils were given a brief insight into the spectrum of careers available with the NHS. Afterwhich they were all invited to get their “hands on”, equipment used within cardiology. Everyone enjoyed practicing their basic life support skills on the resuscitation manikin. In attendance from Cardiology was Mrs Alison Day, Healthcare Science Co-ordinator and Patrick Philips, a fourth year student Cardiac Physiologist.

Southampton General Hospital

This Month saw a new initiative from the Healthcare Science team.  Science teachers from the Southampton area were invited to visit the hospital and explore the healthcare science world.

Twenty teachers from schools and colleges were received by Dr Graham Petley, Medical Physicist, whom presented a overview of Southampton University Hospital Trust and the Healthcare science workforce.

After which, the teachers were given a tour of Medical Physics, Neurophysiology and Cardiology.  Each department demonstrated typical procedures performed in their field.  On completion of the tour, the group were invited to ask questions on qualifications, accessing voluntary work and work experience.
